HDR Imaging Technology

Technical Overview

An image-processing technology that reduces blown highlights(overexposure) and crushed blacks(underexposure), further enhancing the image reproduction capability of D-ILA projectors.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging technology automatically adjusts the dynamic range for projection devices such as projectors.
It instantly analyzes, with a proprietary algorithm, the peak brightness of each scene or frame in the content.
As proprietary functions of JVCKENWOOD, we have developed “Frame Adapt HDR” and “Theater Optimizer.”
“Frame Adapt HDR” performs real-time tone mapping.
“Theater Optimizer” automatically applies the optimal tone mapping according to the installation environment and usage conditions.
These functions enhance the reproducibility of HDR images according to each user’s viewing environment.

Technical Details

• Tone Mapping

A technology that optimizes color and brightness ranges for HDR images.
It allows proper display even on devices whose reproduction range is narrower than that of the human eye.

• Frame Adapt HDR

This technology analyzes the peak brightness of each frame in HDR10 content—a standard format of HDR—using a proprietary algorithm.
It then adjusts the image in real time to the optimal dynamic range for projection devices such as projectors.

At the same time, it analyzes and corrects the saturation, hue, and brightness of the image data.
This correction suppresses hue shifts and prevents desaturation, maintaining natural color reproduction.

As a result, dark scenes achieve deeper black gradation, while bright scenes can reach higher peak brightness without losing color accuracy.
This enables the reproduction of images that appear more natural and closer to what the human eye perceives—something that had been difficult to achieve with projectors until now.

• Theater Optimizer

By inputting the screen size and the gain information, this technology automatically analyzes the projection environment and adjusts tone mapping to ensure appropriate brightness for viewing.
This allows users to enjoy HDR images optimized for their individual installation environments.
